Group’s mission: to improve delivery of service to Hoosiers
Martinsville, Ind. – Serving as one of 11 officials representing municipal, county, township and regional government, Mayor Shannon Kohl has been appointed to the Indiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (IACIR) whose mission is to plan for and address demands on state and local governments.
“State and local governmental entities have their own unique challenges to meet the needs of the citizens we serve, including the continual need to improve delivery of services. I am honored to have been appointed and especially proud to represent the City of Martinsville as I work with my fellow IACIR members on promoting the process of government and the intended and unintended outcomes of policy decisions.
“We also are responsible for fostering long-term planning, improved coordination and communication between all levels of government and citizens and the application of research on policy areas, particularly with the impact of mandates and policy changes,” Kohl said.
Some topics IACIR members work on include financial needs for water and wastewater infrastructure, managing employee health insurance costs and structure and funding for 911 services.
The group of 24 members from the Indiana General Assembly, State administration and local government will meet two to four times this year. In addition to Kohl, other members include IACIR Chair State Senator Ron Grooms from Jeffersonville; Vice Chair State Representative Wes Culver from Goshen; State Senator Joseph Zakas from Granger; State Senator Lonnie Randolph from East Chicago; State Senator Mark Stoops from Bloomington; State Representative Tom Saunders from Lewisville; State Representative Sheila Klinker from Lafayette; State Representative Cherrish Pryor from Indianapolis; Governor Eric Holcomb; Lieutenant Governor Suzanne Crouch; Indiana State Budget Agency Director Jason Dudich; Plainfield Town Council Member Robin Brandgard; Wayne County Commissioner Ken Paust; Hendricks County Council Member Larry Hesson; Wayne Township (Marion County) Trustee Andy Harris; Jasper Mayor Terry Seitz; Columbus Mayor James Lienhoop; Monroe County Council Member Geoff McKim; Allen County Commissioner Therese Brown; Pleasant Township (Allen County) Trustee John Henry; Southeast Regional Planning Commission Director Susan Craig; and Darren Vogt of Fort Wayne and G. Michael Schopmeyer of Evansville who represent citizens with intergovernmental expertise.
Indiana is one of 20 states to establish an intergovernmental commission, with the IACIR created in 1995 and staffed by professionals from the IU Public Policy Institute.
Kohl was appointed by the Indiana State Senate based on a recommendation by AIM (formerly the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns).
